UK’s links to torture must be fully investigated and those complicit held to account, says Roger

Roger has called for a full investigation into the UK’s knowledge of and complicity with the torture of detainees.

He commented: “While accepting that all countries have a right, and a duty to their citizens, to defend themselves against unprovoked and indiscriminate attacks, it is self-defeating for a country’s security forces stoop to the same levels as organisations such as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State. For this reason it is right that the CIA have been heavily criticised for the tactics they used against prisoners taken in military action in Afghanistan and Iraq after 9/11.

“The use of torture to obtain confessions is totally unacceptable behaviour and merely drags the torturer down to the same level as those individuals who have carried out indiscriminate acts of barbarism. There are plenty of other ways that information can be gathered from detainees without the use of torture.”
